Message Summary
Erwin Lutzer opened the Scriptures to Philippians 3:18-21, and showed that not only has "the cross always clashed with popular culture," but also that lost souls in the culture will find hope in the cross alone. Lutzer made it clear that though we may have a different direction, desire, language, aspiration and destination, we must have a passion for the lost. America is lost, but we cannot save it through political power. As Lutzer said, "We cannot clean up America in the name of morality. We must clean up America in the name of Jesus Christ."
Through his message, Lutzer stated that we must engage the culture and change America through the compassion and love of Christ. As believers, our goal is not to have a political agenda but a godly agenda. The gospel must be our platform. We must stand firm in God's path for us, and trust that God will use His truth to change people. It does not matter if they are republican, democrat or an independent. People must be shown Christ's sacrifice, repent and believe.
Finally, we must be humble and show the kindness and love of God. America will notice the difference. Lutzer stated in the end, "The cross of Jesus Christ that saved us must save others." Only after America knows the love of the cross will it change.
Student Response
Dr. Lutzer's message reminded me that Christ is the only way people will truly change. Getting involved in politics is great and should be done by Christians, but our goal should always be showing the sacrificial love of God. Dr. Lutzer helped me see that the real issue is the gospel. I cannot withdraw into my own circle of Christian friends to avoid the reality of modern culture or try to change the culture through politics. I must use the Word of God. I appreciated Dr. Erwin Lutzer and the way he presented the truth behind being passionate for lost souls.
